The Story Behind GROM

Growing up with a deep love for the ocean and water sports, particularly stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), Jin Jino witnessed firsthand the increasing amount of plastic waste washing onto Thailand’s beaches. Rather than simply raising awareness through traditional campaigns, he chose to communicate this important message through character design.

The name “GROM” comes from surf culture, where the term refers to a young surfer who is passionate, adventurous, and eager to learn. This spirit perfectly embodies GROM’s personality—a young guardian who believes every small action can help protect the ocean for future generations

GROM is portrayed as a young ocean explorer and protector, always accompanied by marine life that symbolizes harmony between humans and nature.

His distinctive design features:

• Tentacle-inspired hair representing the mysterious underwater world.
