From the start I've always had a passion for traveling. I believe that understanding and learning about the world is not only found in classes, but going out and truly experiencing these stories and cultures firsthand. The best way to learn about someone or something is to sit down, listen, and watch. Ever since my children were born and walking, I've brought them with me and sent them off to many different countries, all with their own cultures and stories, to deepen their learning and understanding of the world. From Japan to Czech Republic to Panama, my kids and I have traveled the world in order to learn more about it firsthand from the people who make it oh so special.

Although my home does reside in the U.S, I was born in Thailand, so naturally I've always had a connection to my home country. Watching the culture, the way of life, the people, all come to life and comparing it to the states, I've found a newfound appreciation for the hard work that comes with cultural items such as handmade jewelry and clothes, and now I want to share that with the world.

What I Saw in the Villages

As I travelled through Thai villages and small communities, I saw something that is hard to find commonly. Skill that has been refined across generations of families, practiced and improving in secret in these small houses that are typically brushed over.

As I looked more I saw a group of elderly folk sitting about in groups, and despite their age their speed and precision when it came to weaving or stitching was astounding. Not a single thing was made using any machinery, instead every stitch and weave was created by the hands of the people I was watching with my very eyes. And they didn't seem tired, or upset to any degree. They were laughing, smiling, and talking all while creating these beautiful pieces of art.

From there I realized that the quality and speed of their work came from something often overlooked. Passion. To the elders they just got to sit around talking while doing something they loved. Something they were passionate about. And to me I feel that is something we forget in a world so filled with factories and mass production, if you just do something you love, and really put the time and effort into it, it will always turn out better than any machine.

Despite the unbelievable talent all these people hold, many of them struggle to make a living from their work. Almost all of them rely on farming as their primary source of income not because their work lacks quality or value, but rather because they have no way of showing and sharing their talent with the world. I strive to change that.

Why Does The Siam Atelier Exist?

The Siam Atelier was created as a bridge between these artisans and the world, as most do not have devices or any way to share their works online. The Siam Atelier is a place where we can personally go and connect with these people and then advertise it online to a bigger audience so they are able to make a stable living off of something they are actually passionate about.

What Makes Each Piece Extraordinary

Because every item is handcrafted from start to finish — from locally grown natural materials to techniques refined over centuries — no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Colors may vary subtly with the seasons, as natural dyes respond to nature's rhythms. Dimensions may differ slightly from piece to piece.

Every single item is handcrafted from when the materials are picked to when it arrives at your doorstep. Because the materials are natural and local and the techniques used are so old, no two pieces will ever be perfectly alike. For example, colors may subtly change given the season, as natural dyes respond to the change in weather. Also, maybe some dimensions will differ very slightly from piece to piece. What this shows is that there's no factories, no automation, none of that. People are bound to make mistakes and replication is hard as humans. We can't do something the exact same way twice. But those imperfections are what make us authentic. What makes us human. And the works by these people are a beautiful way to represent that.

But what will never vary is quality. Every piece is always carefully inspected before it reaches you.

Made to Order, Made with Care

Most of our pieces are made to order. We do this because anything hand made will take time. If you rush something like this, you won't get the quality that you expect. Stress and Impatience are some of the biggest killers of passion, and we don't want to take that away from the artisans. What we will do is let you walk with them through the process, sharing photos of your piece as it's being made, so you can feel connected to your piece from the very beginning and watch it come to life before your very eyes.

When your piece arrives, you can hold it knowing it is very likely one of a kind in the world and that your purchase has helped sustain a living tradition and a happy community.
