Nuan Studio, a tranquil craft workshop nestled in the surrounding forests of Pak Chong, Khao Yai, was co-founded by Kru Nhanuan (Panadda Photi) and Kru Eve (Natrawee Deethonglang) out of a shared devotion to natural materials and slow craftsmanship. Every piece from Nuan Studio is more than yarn or fabric—it is a living record of the relationship between human hands, time, and the forest, told through pure organic fibers and botanical hues.
1. Inspiration & Philosophy
Wabi-Sabi Aesthetics: Nuan Studio celebrates the quiet beauty of imperfection. The soft, shifting depths of organic tones and the subtle irregularities born from hand-dyeing create a "living charm" that industrial chemical dyes can never replicate.
The Rhythm of Slow Living: Natural dyeing at Nuan is a practice of patience and mindfulness. From foraging materials and preparing the dye baths to drying textiles in the gentle Khao Yai breeze, every step honours the unhurried pace of nature.
Khao Yai’s Natural Palette: Local flora, leaves, and bark from the Pak Chong area are transformed into warm, soothing Earth Tones—true to the studio’s name "Nuan" (meaning soft, gentle, and pleasing to the eye)—offering a tranquil feel that is kind to both skin and environment.
2. Natural Dyeing Techniques & Process
Nuan Studio combines traditional wisdom with meticulous care to achieve long-lasting, one-of-a-kind colorways:
Sourcing Pure Botanical Pigments;
Local Flora: Colors extracted from local resources such as Padauk bark, sappanwood, Malabar tamarind leaves, indigo, and seasonal Khao Yai foliage.
Pure Natural Fibers: Unbleached cotton and linen are chosen to best absorb the natural plant pigments.
Natural Mordanting: Avoiding harsh chemicals, the artisans utilize natural modifiers like iron rust water and natural river mud to transform plant shades into rich, complex hues (e.g., dipping bark-dyed fabric in rust water to shift warm oranges into deep olive or charcoal tones).
Shibori & Botanical Eco-Printing;
Shibori & Resist Dyeing: Folding, twisting, and binding fabrics with wood or cord to create organic, flowy resist-dyed patterns.
Eco-Printing: Direct heat-transfer printing where fresh leaves are arranged onto the fabric and steamed, permanently imprinting the leaf's exact shape and pigment onto the cloth.
